The Siege #3: Impact
Welcome Guild Warriors to the 3rd instalment of The Siege. This week we discuss the impact we think Guild Wars 2 will have when it launches including what it will take for GW 2 to have a god launch; will this game’s success begin the end of the subscription business model; what design elements will other developers have to pay attention to when developing their new mmo’s; and what games will be impacted by the launch of GW2. Also this week we preview the Structured PvP system in the game and discuss what features really stand out to us and what aspects of the system may not e so appealing to at least some of the cast (Grates). We also discuss the many PvP levels and our personal excitement for the tournaments that will be created by the community. Last but not least this week we look at the dungeons of Guild Wars 2 and discuss if we think it is enough to keep the hardcore PvE crowd happy at launch as well as discuss th differences between story mode and explorable mode and talk about all the cool armor sets you can get by running the dungeons. We are really getting excited for launch which is right around the corner and we thank you for your support of our show. See you in-game sooner than later.

As far as 3 maps and 1 mode goes for retaining sPvP interest, Kash nailed it. As long as its balanced and has been well thought out people will happily play the same maps over and over. Combined with the long list of ranks there’s plenty of reason to keep playing. People who love PvP are going to play PvP, they’ll keep playing once they reach the top rank but it’s a slap in the face to anyone if they get the rank after 6 weeks. Ideally it should take a long while to reach it so there’s always a sense of progression in what you’re doing.
Look at games like DOTA and LoL – they have 1 map each (okay LoL has two) yet they have 10’s of thousands of people logged in at any one time trying to slaughter the other team. When I see I’ve clocked 260hrs in DOTA2 and I know I’ve only ever played on 1 map, yet I’m still looking forward to my next match I have no doubt GW2 sPvP will be fine if they nail the basics.
the leveling time is linear according to ANet. using the 4-hour stress tests as a barometer, i’ve consistently gained 3 levels per on my 28 Guardian (i’ve switched my play times thru the beta between a 31 warrior, 28 guardian and 15 ranger).
TOR’s failure is probably going to change how mmo games are made more than GW2′s success would. although, GW2′s success will prove the model if that makes sense.
agree with Joola, a well-executed small number of modes/maps will be fine, especially for the e-sport crowd.
At the 45 minute mark and I fuikcng loved the GW2 interview! Great fuikcng job! I am even looking more forward to this MMO. I love how you are not locked into a type of play style. I love no dedicated healer, as most people suck at healing and better to have to work as a team, then rely on a person. Remember, they are breaking the mold from the normal boring MMO and I am glad. By the why fuck EQ, that’s old hat.
